1. My Keyword Research Service

I've been doing keyword research for a while now. And one thing I have learned is that it is not simple!

It may appear to be so on the surface, but if you want to do it right, there are so many factors to consider. So many different approaches to take. One client or project will have completely different needs than others.

If I see the complexity as an expert on the subject, I can only imagine the confusion some other people may have.

Like yourself (probably), you know that for quality SEO - Keywords are Vital. Yet many still struggle with the practical aspects of the subject.

  • What should I look for in a keyword?
  • Where I do I go to get keywords?
  • How can I find the easiest keywords to rank for?
  • I'm not even sure where to get ideas for keywords!
  • Ok I've gotten a list of keywords, but which ones are the best to use?
  • What is a "Seed Keyword" even and how to I find good ones?
  • Is there a way to tell what keywords my competition is targeting and ranking for?
  • Local SEO? HELP!!!

Man.. The list goes on from there.

So what I am going to do here, is try and inform YOU in ways to understand the answers to these questions.

It doesn't take much time to go through this material. You will come away with a workable understanding of keywords, and will know how to best make use of my keyword service!

I could just take your money, do a little work, and send you a massive spreadsheet full of data. But that isn't likely to do anyone much good!

It is my goal to actually help you as a business person. I want you to have the experience and confidence to know that my data is actually useful!

The Breakdown

You are going to find many helpful and easy to understand pages here.

Breaking down my basic keyword service, what it is, and how it can help your business.

So without further ado, let's discuss briefly what it is my SERVICE is all about, and how it can make your life in SEO easier!

2. Keyword Research Introduction

When ordering almost any low cost service , most expect that they will get either low quality work in return, or just "Good Enough".

After all, what can you really expect for just some dollars?

That's not always the case though! There are many services I myself go to for regularly. But I happen to know where to go for the good stuff! Logo design, account creation, company branding, all sorts of things!

My Keyword Research Service is definitely one of those "Go To" service. I don't mean this to brag, but to inform.

I will elaborate in more detail as we go on.

  • What is my keyword service, and how does it work?
  • What are the Gig Extra's, and are they right for you?
  • How do you use the keyword data and get the most out of it?
  • And of course.. Sample Work!

What my Keyword Service is, and Why it Will Blow Your Mind

This is the meat of the thing. So here is the deal...

In a nutshell, my Keyword Service is all about SEO Ranking Difficulty. How hard is it to rank for this keyword?

As an SEO, you know you need keywords, but you also know you need to know how difficult they are to rank for. Which keywords are going to bring in the fastest results. Or even, which keywords to avoid entirely.

This is nothing new. You can find all kinds of people offering services like this. Most however, you will give them some dollars, and they will come back to you with a list of 10 "The best keywords for you to focus on!" kind of stuff.

Or, they will provide you with a giant list of keywords, with no real data to tell you WHY they think they are good. Or which aren't.

What I Do is a Little Different

I will provide you with a list of up to 700+ keywords, with ALL of them analyzed for SEO ranking difficulty.

Step 1: Provide me with a seed keyword.

Step 2: I use that seed keyword to expand it up to 700+ different keywords.

Step 3: Then I analyze each and every one of those keywords for a number of factors. The most important being SEO Ranking Difficulty.

Step 4: I create a beautifully formatted Excel Spreadsheet from the data. This makes it super easy to see immediately which keywords to target, and which to avoid.

Just to Show You How Easy It Is:

Here is a live example demonstrating the power of this data, and how obvious it makes keyword selection.

So let's dive a little deeper here, and go through what exactly is going on. In the next article, you will learn what the Ranking Difficulty metric is based upon.

You will also learn what expectations you can have for the various ranges here. Once you use this data for just a little while, it becomes so simple to find tons of gold you would otherwise have missed out on!

Moving on to Understanding Ranking Difficulty...

3. Understanding Ranking Difficulty

Let's quickly clarify what we mean when we use the term Ranking Difficulty in terms of keywords and SEO.

Most of you will likely already be clear on this, but let's make certain!

Ranking Difficulty refers to how much time, effort, and money it will take to be able to rank on Page 1 (Or even position 1) for any given keyword.

There are a number of indicators that can be looked at to try and determine this. It can be done manually, but that takes an in depth understanding of the factors. It also takes a lot of time and effort.

Automated Solutions

Many utilities exist to help with this of course. Such as Market Samurai or Longtail Pro. They are massive time savers for sure! However, they struggle when you want to work in bulk.

Analyzing keywords one at a time, even with these time savers, can still be a massive undertaking.

Using either Market Samurai or Longtail Pro (for example), it would literally take a person weeks to fetch the data.

That's NO B.S.!

Just try loading a list of keywords into either tool, and clicking on them one at a time. Sometimes taking minutes per keyword to analyze. Man.. I don't miss that crap.

The approach I use though uses massive amounts of clustered queries. Tons of proxies, processing tons of keywords at a time!

A Closer Look at the Metrics

In the example above, you can see I have sorted the data by Monthly Searches. Looking for the keywords with the highest traffic. However, what I am really paying attention to here is the "Rank 1-10" column.

Essentially meaning "Ranking Difficulty".

The lower this number, the easier it will typically be to rank for the keyword. The metric is based upon a large number of factors:

Of the Top 10 Results Found for the Keyword:

  • What is the average amount of backlinks each page has?
  • Are there many pages that have high (or low) Page Authority? (Or DA)
  • How many Social Signals does each page have? (Although this data is not included in my spreadsheet, it remains a determining factor behind this metric.)
  • How frequently does the exact match keyword occur in the Page Title, URL, or Meta Description?
  • What are the MozRankings for the pages found in the Top 10?
  • And a number of other less important factors.

So as you can see... This metric is pretty handy!

Instead of getting back 10 keywords from another seller who has simply ran a few random ones through Market Samurai or Longtail Pro, My approach results in MUCH larger sample sets, with even more accurate data.

Word of Warning!! : As always, it is up to you to interpret the data and make decisions upon it! If a keyword seems "Too Good to Be True" it probably is! This can result from a number of things. Moz having incomplete data on a page for instance. Or Google's industry specific ranking systems. Sometimes it will want to rank ECommerce pages for a specific term for instance, and NOT blog articles!

That said, my data is simply the best place to start! There is no better. Trust me, if there was I would be doing that and selling using that approach instead. Keywords are my passion, and this data simply kicks ass. That's all there is to it. ;)

So Which Keywords are Hard, and Which are Easy?

"Well that's all fine and dandy, but I have no experience with these numbers. What should I be looking at in the Rank 1-10 column or know which are easy and which are hard???"

Here are the results I've found to be pretty typical myself.

  • Rank Values around 10 are typically so easy, you shouldn't even need links to rank Page 1 if you do your On-Site SEO well.
  • Rank Values around 20 will also typically rank Page 1 with basic link building without much effort on your part. Although they may take a bit longer to get there.
  • Rank Values around 30, yeah you might do well to do some more link building. (Remember to build Internal Links as well!!)
  • Rank Values around 40-50 take more effort. You may want some high quality, relevant, external links pointing to pages for those keywords.
  • Greater than 50... Those require concerted effort on your part to rank still. Not impossible! Just takes attention to a number of details. You will want good links, social signals, and probably even good Time on Page / Bounce Rate signals before it ranks highly.
  • Anything above 80.. I would actually just avoid completely if I were you. Unless you have a really good reason to go after them and have a good budget.

To Simplify Even More:

  • Ranking Difficulty is Under 30 - Go for it!
  • Ranking Difficulty is Over 30 - Think about it. ;)

First though, we will need a Good Seed Keyword to get started!!

4. Selecting a Seed Keyword and What They Are

Before we can begin obtaining any useful data at all, first we must understand what a Seed Keyword is, and how to select a good one.

What is a Seed Keyword?

A seed keyword, is essentially a keyword we would like to know more about. It will be used to generate a list of other related keywords.

If you are running a blog that has a subject matter of dieting or weight loss for instance, you may want to know what other keywords to write articles about. In that case both "diets" or "weight loss" would be good examples of possible seed keywords.

For each seed keyword I process you can expect up to 700+ related keywords to be generated.

How a Seed Keyword Turns into More Keywords

To make the most of my services, it will help you to understand exactly where these other related terms come from. This can help you make a decision regarding what you want to explore.

Seed Keyword expansion takes place in the standard way: Google Keyword Planner.

Remember the Magic: SEO Ranking Difficulty

Before we get too deep into the guts of quality keyword selection, let me remind you of something. Even though my Expansion occurs using a tool that is free for everyone, it is the fact that all of those keywords we find using it will be analyzed for Ranking Difficulty by me!

That is the valuable part! No guess work.

Google Keyword Planner "Competition" Value

You may notice in Google Keyword Planner that there is a column titled "Competition". This value is not to be confused with SEO Ranking Difficulty!

I see people get confused over this an awful lot still. Google's Competition Value actually refers to the paid competition you can expect. How many people are bidding on the keyword?

If you are building an AdSense for instance, you would actually WANT to see a high Competition Value! That means you are more likely to get paid for the term when people visit your site.

However, if you are trying to do PPC (Pay Per Click) on Google AdWords yourself, you would desire the opposite; a Low Competition Value.

Whereas my Rank 1-10 metric is specific to ranking in the Google SERPs (Search Engine Results Page).

Selecting a Good Seed Keyword

So we know what a seed keyword is now, but how do we know which ones to explore?

Generally speaking, it is a good idea to mine a large number of keywords to work with. A nice healthy list of keywords can last a publisher or author a whole year! Creating that content takes time and effort after all. But you don't want to spin your wheels.

What I recommend most people do here, is to work from the general down to the specific.

After running those more general keywords, I may find a number of other keywords that I am also interested in knowing more about. Then I would run those, and expand my database of keywords.

Going From the General to the Specific

Let's continue with the dieting example shall we?

Assuming I am going to be starting a brand new site that is going to cover diets of various types, I am going to look for seed keywords that are very general first.

For example, I may go to Google Keyword Planner and search for: "diet".

After running the keyword, I would then go through the results and look for terms that are related, but different enough to return unique results that "diet" alone missed out on.

Running "diet" through GKP returns results that I would then use as inspiration for more exploration. Then I write down any terms that inspire me to look more closely. Modifying them as appropriate to try and be general again if at all possible.

I see "weight loss diets" returned. Which I then turn into a new Seed Keyword "weight loss".

Or "detox diet", which may turn into a seed "Detox" or "Detoxing".

"Healthy diet plan" might give me the idea to try out "healthy eating" as a seed keyword!

Each of these terms will return a large number of unique results. If you take the time to develop a solid list of seed keywords in this fashion, and then process them for Ranking Difficulty, you will find TONS of gold!

Even in 'saturated' markets, there are always, always, low hanging fruit that are easy to rank for. It just takes a little digging!

Final is Example Keyword Project

5. Example of DONE FOR YOU Keyword Project

This is where things get interesting!

Here you will see exactly what you can expect from my Keyword Service. At the bottom of the post there is a link to a sample deliverable of mine so there will be no surprises at all!

The example project I'm going to process here is for the Diet niche of course. As that's what I've been doing up until now. =)

You will see me select a number of Seed Keywords for the diet niche. Pretending this is an actual client who needs a good thorough selection of keywords to develop a content plan from.

I am going to select 6 of my own Seeds for them. Simply going into Google Keyword Planner and trying to isolate a solid set with enough variety, that when they are compiled together produce minimal amounts of duplicate keywords.

If you wish to make the most of my services, this is a useful point to keep in mind. If you provide me with Seed Keywords that are too similar to one another, the number of duplicates could be quite high.

Selecting Some Seed Keywords

To begin with, since this is the Diet niche, and I want to go from the general to the specific I am going to start with the keyword Diet.

I already know that will be one of my seeds, as it is very generic, and will probably provide some very interesting results when I process it using Google Suggest.

Keep in mind by the way, there are MANY ways to go about finding some Seed Keywords. SEMRush, playing around Google Suggest manually, looking at other people's websites… There are TONS of ways to skin this cat. However, Google Keyword Planner remains the most solid place to begin with a new project in my opinion.

Looking through the list, I see some interesting terms that might work! :

Diet and fitness articles
Healthy Diet
Low Calorie Diet
Weight Loss Diet
Diet Plans for Women

Ok this is interesting. Of course, it is not surprising to see "Diet" all over the place, as that WAS the seed term we began with.

However, I think we may be able to get a more broad initial set of data if we can reduce these keywords to more generic terms. Trying still, to keep things relevant to the interests of people who would be interested in material on dieting of course!

Proceeding, I decide to trim these keywords into the following selection:

Fitness
Healthy
Low Calorie
Weight Loss
Womens Health

All of these keywords are VERY different from one another! But they are also covering the exact subject I want to cover on my site. Losing weight, dieting, staying healthy, etc.

Add the keyword "Diet" to that, and I know I will get a ton of very useful data for me to work with.

Performing Expansion on Them

At this point, it's time for me to dig into things. I'm going to process each one of these one at a time. List the number of results found for each keyword using Expansion. Then I'm going to combine them into a single report and detail the number of duplicates removed afterwards.

This should give you a fairly good idea about what to expect. =)

You will quickly notice that almost all of them returned hundreds results. This is normal for Google Keyword Planner. Unless we are looking at very esoteric terms, or using another language, hundreds results is fairly typical at this stage.

Diet - 621 Results.
Fitness - 567 Results.
Healthy - 437 Results.
Low Calorie - 437 Results.
Weight Loss - 730 Results.
Womens Health - 322 Results.
Whoops! Probably could have found more results if we went a different way here, but these terms could still provide some very nice longtails we wouldn't have found otherwise. =)

3114 Results! Not too shabby!

Combining and Analyzing the Results

The next thing we do is combine them into one large list and remove the duplicates.

Duplicates Found: 547

Yeah!! See that's a really good run right there. With only 547 duplicates found, we are left with 2567 Keywords to work with.

The real question we want to ask ourselves now though is, "Yeah, but how many of these keywords should I look into using?"

To keep things simple, all I want to know first is how many of these keywords have Rank Values under 15 and still have traffic. Those are the keywords that are likely to get me the easiest results. Many of them won't even need any links built to them if we make some half decent content.

Lastly, I am also interested in a larger list of any keywords with a Rank Value of under 50. These are frequently still really good terms to target. Even if they are a bit harder to rank for, this is where I will be most likely to find some of the really high value, highly trafficked terms I want to aim for.

Keywords with Rank Values of 20 or Lower: 71

Not bad. =)

We already know a sizable amount of terms that will yield us very fast results.

What about keywords under 50 though. We are planning to go for the long haul here after all!

Keywords with Rank Values of 50 or Lower: 1577

And everyone said this market was too saturated to work in. HAH!! =) SO MUCH GOLD STILL!

A Word to the Wise

By now you should probably have a pretty good idea of what my Keyword Research service is about and how it works.

You will never know just how kick ass it is though until you actually try to use it!

A little advice for people either new to SEO, or just interested in seeing some quick results.. Remember you still need to use your brain a bit with this data and take action with it!

If you see any keywords in the data that appear to be too good to be true, think to yourself: "How many other longtail keywords could I possibly come up for that include this keyword?" If the answer is A LOT, I would start with those longtails first.

For example.. In this data I just ran for this example, I see that the keyword "fruit diet" is coming up with a Rank Value of 35. This would normally be a signal to me that I should be able to rank for that term pretty easily if given a few months.

However.. I am suspicious and narrow my eyes when I see things like that. Because I can just immediately tell there are literally hundreds of longtails that can be associated with that. And that makes me think it is too good to be true.

BUT, and this is big, I would take that as a sign that it would be a very good idea to begin tackling those "fruit diet" longtails! Try to create 10 pieces of really good content around fruit diet terms and see what happens. Increase the site relevance you have for those shorttails and you become much more likely to be able to rank these broader terms.

Summary

Well I've walked you through what it is I do pretty thoroughly here. Even if it did turn out to be a long read. =)

As I mentioned earlier though, it is important to me that my services and data are actually useful to people! It is my hope that the information I have put up here will help you be able to grow as an SEO.

If you learn how best to use my services, you will in turn profit and begin ranking for more terms more easily.

To Bring this to Reality
